23 OCTOBER
1892 Details emerged today of the mysterious disappearance of two officers at the Hampstead workhouse where a new master and matron, Mr and Mrs Graves, had recently been appointed. At a recent meeting of the guardians, Mr Graves requested five days' leave of absence from the workhouse, which was granted. At the same meeting Miss Lyon, who for several years had been assistant matron of the workhouse, tendered her resignation, which was accepted. The following Saturday, Mr Graves departed for his leave. On the same day Miss Lyon obtained permission from Mrs Graves for two hours' absence, in order, she said, to meet her sister at Waterloo Station. Mrs Graves later received a telegram from Lyon stating that she was going on to Southampton, as her father was very ill there, and that she would return the following Tuesday. She did not return, however, and had not been heard from since. It transpired that she had sent her boxes away from the workhouse before she left. Mr Graves, too, had not been heard of. It was said that all his accounts were in order and no reason for his disappearance could be found in that direction.
