1873 A pauper at the Plympton St Mary Union workhouse in Devon committed suicide by hanging himself. He appeared to have made a rope for that purpose using hemp taken from the room used for oakum-picking — a task given to inmates involving the teasing apart of old ropes into their constituent fibres.
