In 1925, four-year old William Golding and his mother entered the Stockbridge Union workhouse in Hampshire. A little later, he was placed in the Southampton Union's Hollybrook cottage homes at Shirley Warren where he spent the next ten years.

The following reminiscences were recorded in January 2005. The audio clips (each approximately 2 minutes long) are in MP3 audio format.
