Benevolent Asylum, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
The Ballarat Benevolent Asylum opened by the Ballarat Benevolent Society in 1859, during the Australian gold rush era. Its occupied premises on Ascot Street, Ballarat, where it housed destitute men, women and children, as well as deserted wives, and — in its early years — orphaned or abandoned children. From 1869, the children were housed in the separate Ballarat District Orphan Asylum.

By 1960, the Benevolent Asylum had become the Queen Elizabeth Geriatric Centre. In 1997 it merged with the Ballarat Base Hospital and the Grampians Psychiatric Service to form Ballarat Health Services.
