Workhouses and Poor Law Unions in England

Early workhouses were usually administered by single parishes, but groups or unions of parishes later took on this role, with the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act creating a system of Poor Law Unions across the whole of England and Wales. This page gives a county-by-county guide to the post-1834 unions in England. (Where unions included parishes in more than one county, the one generally used in poor law records is given.
