Save Clitheroe Workhouse!
Another historic workhouse building is facing the bulldozer, if hospital chiefs in Clitheroe get their way. The former Clitheroe union workhouse, in more recent times the home of the Clitheroe Community Hospital, is currently the subject of a planning application which - if successful - would see the demolition of the buildings and their replacement by housing.
The importance of the workhouse in the social and architectural history of this country is increasingly being recognised. The buildings themselves, as in Clitheroe, were often designed by eminent architects of the day. Jonas Bradshaw's design for Clitheroe workhouse is an excellent example of the institutional architecture of the period.
A campaign to save this historic local landmark has been mounted by the Clitheroe Civic Society and has the support of Lord Clitheroe and local MP Nigel Evans. If you wish to comment on the planning proposal, please contact the local council - the details are given below.
