- 18th April, 2007 - Songs of the Victorian Workhouse live at Northwich Salt Museum
The Salt Museum is taking a new approach to interpret the history of the building in which it is housed. The museum on London Road was formerly the Northwich Union Workhouse and home to the poorest people of the area from 1839.
On Wednesday 18th April a special performance of songs, readings and drama taken from original Victorian sources will take place to bring the past to life. Local musician Roy Clinging has researched many songs and ballads which shed light on lives of the poor who would have lived in the workhouse, who were often ignored by the other media of the times. As well as developing a script and some new material for the event, Roy will head a band of penny ballad sellers and other Victorian characters in the performance which is to take place in the historic workhouse setting of the Board of Guardians meeting room, now part of the Salt Museum.
The performance begins at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18th April. Tickets are available from the Salt Museum priced £4, or by calling the museum on 01606 41331.
